Competent action thriller that wants to be a drama
Reviewed by Happy_Evil_Dude Vote: 7/10
Wild Card has been a passion project of Jason Statham's for several years, the actor having even secured Brian De Palma for the director's chair at one point. With De Palma stepping away, Statham enlisted the competent but much less exciting Simon West with whom he'd already collaborated on The Mechanic and The Expendables 2. West was excited to work with legendary screenwriter William Goldman again after The General's Daughter and assembled an impressive supporting cast around Statham, the likes of Stanley Tucci, Anne Heche, Jason Alexander and many more. A vastly underrated actor, Statham easily holds his own among these and gives a fine performance as Nick Wild, first played in the 1986 original by Burt Reynolds. That picture was a notoriously troubled production that left a sour taste in William Goldman's mouth, but he obviously thought highly of his screenplay, as story-wise, Wild Card plays almost exactly like the original, beat-by-beat. However, watching the on-screen proceedings it is hard to believe this is the same man responsible for such classics as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men, The Princess Bride and so many others. From its top notch cast to its look and pacing, Wild Card feels like it wants to a gritty drama, a moody character piece with bursts of action in the vein of Michael Mann's Collateral, a film with which it shares quite a few characteristics. Unfortunately it never quite reaches the heights of its ambitions, the film being unable to conjure up something special, unexpected, original enough to put it over the top. That is not to say it doesn't deliver. Without saying much, the film draws you into this world easily and convincingly. The acting is very strong and the characters pretty appealing. The writing is sharp. Cinematographer Shelly Johnson gives the film a distinctive look and the editing is excellent. The score is composed by the ultra-talented Dario Marianelli. And then there's the action. While there are only but a few of them, the action scenes, handled by Hong Kong legend and frequent Statham collaborator Cor(e)y Yuen, are incredible, exhilarating and eminently memorable. Even more to the film's credit, each one is very different, both through their visual and musical presentations. All this makes for a perfectly serviceable film but one unfortunately stuck between two worlds. Which makes it quite a shame that Brian De Palma backed out of the project as his style would have no doubt elevated Wild Card to something pretty fascinating.

A Hilarious, Adventurous Film Perfect for Sharing with Younger Kids
Reviewed by rannynm Vote: 9/10
This film is hilarious, adventurous and much more! It will appeal to kids as well as adults and has a very unique idea. Russell Madness is a perfect family story that will be enjoyed by many. Russell Madness has a feel of comedy with a wrap-around of family ties, while still having a core of wrestling and a little sprinkle of suspense. The story starts when a family moves back to Oregon to take over an old wrestling ring which belonged to the family for a long time. It is a bit run down, but a new generation opens it back up. Then, during a first match, something very interesting happens. A dog named Russell (dompletely by coincidence) comes into the ring where a big tough and strong wrestler is. What happens next is absolutely unexpected and surprising. This film is stupendous! Something I really like about it is that Russell's coach is a monkey named Hunk. And yes, it is a talking monkey, played by a very smart and adorable monkey named Crystal, except for the talking parts of course, which I think is a great and smart idea. The acting is wonderful and the whole film has that perfect amount of cheesiness, cuteness and positivity to make it a wonderful family film. Also, the jokes are original and hilarious. My favorite scene is about the family's first encounter with Hunk. Hunk tells them to take in Russell as a family dog and offers to train Russell to be a wrestler. But, his price is many things doing with bananas. It is funny and an important scene in the movie. I recommend for kids ages 5 to 18 and I give it 5 out of 5 stars for fantastic acting, production, directing, and unbelievable animal training. Don't miss it when it comes out in the spring of 2015! A very bad B movie

When I watched this movie it had a 4.7 rating. I thought it couldn't be that bad - it starred Bruce Willis after all. Turns out Willis must have owed someone a big favor, because this movie is really terrible. Poor acting, poor script and poor directing. And what's up with the artificial smoke? It's everywhere. This movie is everything Blade Runner wasn't and I mean that in the worst possible way. I rate it 2 because Willis doesn't act quite as bad as the rest of the lead cast. In short, this movie was a major disappointment and I wonder what it was that made Willis say yes to play a part in it.

"Dragonheart 3: The Sourcerer's Curse" is a fun fantasy movie with brilliant action sequences and just enough story to keep most viewers entertained. The film is immediately better than its "A New Beginning" predecessor and is a decent sequel to the original, incorporating enough of the lore and original score to make any fan geek out for a moment. The film starts out at a brilliant pace, but is held back by some really glossy character development towards the middle, but is ultimately redeemed by its final action set piece and good casting choices. It is not clear where the film takes place in the time-line, but it seems to take place decades or even a century or two before the first film on the series. The ending leaves a blank page for a possible "Dragonheart 4" or possibly a Television show and is overall a fun journey worth a visit.

Landscape is Destiny
Reviewed by David Ferguson (fergusontx@gmail.com) Vote: 5/10
Greetings again from the darkness. The Hatfields and McCoys family feud has long been a favorite topic and inspiration for literary and film projects. Lesser known, but ultimately more tragic and historically vital, is the 1863 Shelton Laurel Massacre during the Civil War. The novel from Ron Rash is the foundation of director David Burris' film that explores the fallout of that incident more than 100 years later in the very rural Appalachian hills of Madison County, North Carolina. It doesn't take us long to get a line on Travis (Jeremy Irvine, War Horse), a high school dropout with authority issues who hangs out with his equally aimless friends, including Shane (Haley Joel Osment, The Sixth Sense). We have seen many film depictions of hillbillies over the years, so the grim atmosphere of unemployment, isolation, lack of education, drugs and lack-of-hope aren't surprising, and the undercurrent of the 1863 event is what should have set this one apart. Interest picks up when teacher-turned-drug dealer Leonard (Noah Wyle) takes Travis under his wing after Travis has an unfortunate run-in with Carlton (Steve Earle), another local drug dealer. Travis moves in with Leonard and his drug-addicted girlfriend (Minka Kelly), and takes a real interest in the journals of Civil War soldiers that Leonard has collected. These stories spark a curiosity within Travis, in particular the saga of 13 year old David Shelton ? one of the victims of the massacre. It's the fact that Travis is oblivious to the history of his family, and how this event has so affected life in his hometown, that makes this story difficult to buy into. In spite of the communication void between Travis and his father, it's just not possible that the massacre would not have been a frequent topic of discussion throughout the years. Beyond that, this is little more than a typical small town battle between drug dealers ? albeit two very articulate drug dealers. And yes, guns and turf do play a role here. Jeremy Irvine, Noah Wyle and Steve Earle each make their characters someone interesting to watch. On the other hand, the female characters are mostly after-thoughts or plot devices. Travis' mother maintains a forlorn look that registers her resignation to fate, while Minka Kelly mostly gets knocked around (save for one excellent scene while alone with Travis), and Adelaide Clemens provides the rare sparks of light and optimism as Travis' love interest ? and then just as quickly becomes a non-entity. The fine acting and excellent camera work deserved a better story, especially given the framework of history. There is a recurring hillbilly philosophy in the movie that states "Time don't pass. It's just layers. It's all still happening." That philosophy could have better tied the current story into the past, which would have elevated this film to a new level.

Divergent
was not brilliant, but it was your average young adult movie. Insurgent
is way below that. It is so bad that I wanted to leave the theater and
read my book. But anyway, let's talk about the movie. In the first film
Tris learns she is special, in the second she learns she is *very*
special, but just if her boyfriend lets her do anything. Seriously, I
actually had to ask my wife if girls like guys like him or is it just
the submissive fantasy of the author. Apparently, a lot of girls like
overbearing assholes who think they know what is better for you. And
guess who makes her appearance in the sequel? The mother in law! Bottom
line: the sci-fi aspect of the film was marginal, the characters cliched
to the point of monomolecular cardboard and the basic story was
learning to accept yourself as your boyfriend tells you what to do while
he deals with his mommy issues. I am not kidding: the most sympathetic
character in Insurgent was Peter, the asshole who always insults and
betrays everybody. P.S. The Erudite test was remembering something that
had happened to you two nights ago? Really? That's what makes you smart?

I have to say, I think the people who don't enjoy this movie must have had a sense of humour bypass,it's just such fun,and likable. Combat on the other hand is poor, especially in the big fight near the end of the movie where the orcs are just standing there and doing nothing, just waiting for... well, nothing. When surrounded the heroes should be fighting for their lives and being hit from every side, that would have been more epic. Maybe you guys should keep an eye on the combat scenes. Hitting someone with a foam or plastic sword or mace shouldn't hurt any of the actors. hehe! I know you work hard, but make sure you take each combat scene a couple of times to make it look the best and especially the most believable. I know you are more interested in telling a story, but a movie needs to have good visuals too, not need to be Hollywood or Disney quality, just well made one with the budget you have. Have the enemies of the hero hit them next time, even if the blows glances off armour or shields, it makes the fight more believable and intense. Kudos again for a good movie considering you had a limited budget. :D

"House 3D» (2015, dir. Tim Johnson) - a fantastic new
3D cartoon studio «DreamWorks». Based on the novel by children's author Adam
Rex, this animated film is not solely visual entertainment, but also focuses on
the fact that children can understand:
* The importance of friendship in spite of the initial
hostility between two very dissimilar beings, friendship is an integral part of
life.
* Through the Eyes of a stranger we see that usually do not
notice and do not appreciate: the purring cat, ice cream, etc ..
* Irresistible rhythm: see as O reacts to music on the
radio.
* Tells the tale color: On green, when he tells a lie.
* Commitment to the family: O lost his parents for a long
time and trying to find his mother. About upbeat and always sees the best in everyone.
* See how hard to cancel an erroneous E-mail invitation.
The plot is a little confusing to the inevitable happy
ending, but you'll be happy with the output of the theater that had a good
time.
